I found an article from Lisa Collier Cool titled “The Health Mistake That 80% of Americans Make”, on YahooHealth!. Spoiler alert, it’s not consuming enough fiber as a part of your diet. In the article, Lisa asks,“If a miracle ingredient found in many tasty, inexpensive foods helped you lose weight, live longer, and avoid dangerous diseases, wouldn’t you eat it every day?” Unfortunately, the answer for most Americans is No.
Why do so many Americans fail to get enough soluble and insoluble fiber? My theory is that it’s all linked to the driving force behind the escalating obesity problem. Cheap, convenient and complicated, is more desirable to the majority of Americans when compared to simple whole foods, that require some degree of planning (you can’t drive through), and may cost a bit more than the fat-laden items found on a value menu. The YahooHealth! article does a nice job of listing fiber-rich foods, and notes that they are found in fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains. Not exactly the traditional fare of the fast-food restaurant.
For those looking to make the shift and bring down the percent of those not getting enough fiber, here is a listing of foods rich in insoluble (helps food move through your system effectively) and soluble (helps reduce cholesterol and blood sugar) fiber:

Foods Rich in Soluble Fiber:
Eating more of these foods is a great way to dramatically improve your overall health. Increasing your intake of fiber-rich foods, while reducing the amount of red meat you eat is like a double-shot of health, which will likely pay dividends in terms of weight, appearance and energy. Give it a shot.
